This class has improved my eye for identifying what makes good design; And even better I now have a good set of skills to create great looking designs in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. My advice would be to start assignments as soon as possible, especially the mid-term and final. The assignments are fun, but time consuming. There are also a ton of great references out there; I frequented the smashing magazine site a lot for inspiration.

This class was a waste of time. You could just spend some time playing around in photoshop and illustrator and learn just as much. The end of the semester quiz made me feel like i was in second grade. Did you really just ask me to name the primary colors? Take my advice, don't spend thousands in tuition to take this class. Take it at a community college or just read a book about the adobe suite.

This class really improved my graphic design abilities. I can do so much with Illustrator and Photoshop. It is a time consuming challenge at times but it is completely worth it if you want to bolster your graphic design skills. I would take it as early as possible at SI because it will inform your other design classes immensely.

Advice: If you're like me, and you've never used the Adobe software, give yourself time at the beginning of the term to read through books, watch online tutorials, and simply play around with the programs. Especially Photoshop and Illustrator. Supplementing class with these resources helped me learn new tricks, and speed up my work time. Biggest time saver: keyboard shortcuts! Particularly if you are working on a Mac, there are dozens of keyboard shortcuts that, once learned, will help you work much faster.

Soak it all in, even if you think it's irrelevant. I never used Illustrator before and now I've used it in 2 other classes and an internship. You're going to spend A LOT of time on the assignments. You're going to want to throw your computer out the window. But in the end, you'll never regret taking this class. Also, don't be afraid to ask Elena, she's extremely caring and helpful.

Advice: It is one of the most useful class I have took ever. Typography, logo, color, grid, etc. There are design elements everywhere in our life, especially those small and simple things that I have been used to and not realized it. After this class, I right now can really see design differently.

Advice - pick and chose the assignments that you really care about for portfolio purposes or because of the skills they will teach you. Spend more time on these - take the time you need to really learn the tools, apply ideas and be creative. On others, stick to the letter of the assignment. Complete was is required and do not waste time trying to put your own spin on things in any way. If you carefully follow instructions, you can do well on those less interesting assignments without spending a lot of time developing ideas (note though - the assignments still won't be quick).

Work on finding what appeals to your own style. It is easy to be jealous of other people's designs and aesthetic, but the point of learning the techniques in this class is not to be able to copy others; the point is to learn how to visually express your own ideas. It takes time and practice to do this. It is easy to put work off until the last minute, do it, and produce something mediocre. MAKE TIME to work on assignments early. MAKE TIME to look at other designs. MAKE TIME to critique professional work. The more quality work you consume, the more quality ideas you have to play with. Please, for the sake of the people who will have to use or look at the logos, websites, apps, and documents that you make or influence in the future, MAKE TIME FOR DESIGN.

to do well in this class, you need to stay on top of the work. It\'s not particularly hard, but it takes a decent amount of time and if you fall behind, it\'s hard to catch back up. Give this class your priority and you will do well. Slack off and you will quickly fall behind.

Advice: anticipate and dedicate an inordinately large amount of time to accomplish every lab and homework, pressure the instructor to allow more time to complete labs in class, start working on the labs right away when you get to class instead of paying attention in class, whenever the instructor is demonstrating something, stop and watch what's happening on screen, rather than trying to keep up on your own computer

advice for future students: to structure my work on assignments, I would make my own version of the checklist with everything I had to do listed in order, from downloading the materials and making a sketch to printing and uploading to Scribd. Going into the midterm I felt confident in what I studied based on what the previous midterms (practice exams) had asked. I spent a lot of time getting the random variable probability distributions down, and less time studying the different statistical tests. So having seen the previous exams was both helpful and a detriment. The format was different enough from the previous exams to make it harder, and threw me off a bit. I thought question 9 was misleading when it asked for a "test." I instinctively thought some type of t test or binomial test, not probability distribution.

For myself (and others I have spoken to), I have found that this class could be structured in a much more helpful manner. The current setup of two lectures a week, without any type of discussion section leaves many of us floundering. I would suggest for future stats courses to have a lecture focused on the statistics with a discussion section that goes over HOW to use stat in R with in-class help. Right now it feels like I've been thrown into a river and told to swim with the instructions to just wave my arms to keep afloat. I don't feel like I'm learning much because I'm constantly struggling just to figure how to do the homework.

Hi Lada, Just a heads up that getting a loaner laptop for your class may be quite difficult. I contacted the SI computing people twice and never heard back. To be fair to them, since I knew I was only going to be without a laptop for up to 2 weeks, I did not push them by stopping into their office or calling them up. I only emailed them a couple of times. I now have a working laptop of my own, but I thought you might be interested in my difficulties if future students are stuck without a laptop of their own.

Would appreciate it if classmates recognized the existence of different learning styles and that sometimes whispering to a peer clarifies the lesson Lada is teaching. (whispering about non-class related topics should be stopped) Additionally, this feedback tool is ridiculous in that it furthers the passive aggressive tendencies that already permeates SI. Similarly, I do not like lecture tools in that as the comment from 3/11 suggests, it makes people uncomfortable raising their hands and compels them to ask all questions through technology...why do we even have class when it could just be done online as I am not to ask my friends for help or raise my hand to ask the teacher a question?

I would find it helpful to have the lecture the night before, to at least be prepared for what coming. When I see things for the first time at 8:40 in the morning, and they don't always look familiar from the book, I get really confused. By seeing the lecture slides beforehand, I get a chance to get a sense of what I don't get, formulate questions and think about what I dont get before I ask. It's often a problem of "I don't even know what questions to ask" in the morning because it's overwhelming.

The R book is good when I want to look things up, but not to read through (even when you try the commands in R while you read). The Stats for Behavioral Science book is also better as a reference than for reading through--I feel the examples obfuscate concepts I already understand.

I like the idea of Google Docs Forms. I'm going to attend a tutorial on Lecture Tools this afternoon, but if none of the "classroomy" features are appealing enough, we'll switch to forms. -- Lada

Attaching the mic between the collar bones positions it in the center of one's body, close to one's mouth, providing optimal voice capture. Also, bring extra batteries. Speakers often forget to turn off the mic.

If Lecture Tools isn't working out, you could use the Google Docs Form feature to collect responses from us. They create a few charts automagically, but all the data is also dumped into a spreadsheet so you can make your own as well (or export as CSV and then import into R). Just a thought...see an intro to forms

Printing assignments on their due date, while the teacher was lecturing, was a problem last semester too. Not only was it hard to hear, but it's inconsiderate and rude. Making homework due at the start of class, printed and ready, seems a practical and respectable requirement.
